Frequently Asked Questions
Question: When will Mail Archiver X support mail application xxx?
Answer: Make a feature request in the Send Mail section and support for it will be added in the next version.
Question: Why doesn't Mail Archiver X show all my umlauts/special characters?
Answer: While we make every effort to show all characters correctly, some mail applications simply did not send the necessary information and Mail Archiver X has to guess the character set of the mail. Sometimes it guesses incorrectly. However, even the mail applications don't always guess correctly. If you have recurring problems with umlauts, please send some example mails to Moth Software Mainz (see Q/A on raw data of mails and on character set/encoding).
Question: Why do you want my mails for troubleshooting and which data do you need?
Answer: The devil is in the detail. We usually need to analyse the header part of the mail, which looks like

To send us the mail with this data it is not sufficient to redirect or resend a mail. You need to to the following: Select the menu item File/Save as. Select the format Plain Text and click on the option "Save Attachments". Send this file as an attachment.
Question: What is a character set/an encoding?
Answer: For us mere humans an "a" is an "a". Computers are a bit more complicated. Letters are represented by a number between 0 and 256. Unfortunately, different languages had different ideas, which numbers to take for special characters like our german umlauts like "ä". Each single one of those is called a character set or encoding. This by itself wouldn't have been so bad, if there had been a 100% sure method to say "This text is german or french.". Most mail clients do it in some way. Some mails don't contain the necessary information. The result of this may be some garbare characters in the mails like "Gr??en", which should read "Grüßen" or regards.
